Lies, Lies, and more Lies!

I was hired at the Sports Authority in Plano, TX as a seasonal employee in November 2008. This being my first job, I thought the $7.51 hourly wage was okay...with the understanding that if they decided to keep me on after the holidays, I would be eligible for a raise. They kept me on but told me that due the economy the company had frozen all raises until further notice. All the while, they continue to hire new people at higher rates than I was being paid. When I voiced my opinion on their practices, they told me that I would be up for a promotion and a good raise if I would move to the footwear department. I trusted them and so moved to that department in 2009. Now, they tell me that the new DM will not approve my promotion until he sees my sales numbers come up. All the while, they put pressure on us to sell ECP's (extended warranties) that no one wants or cares to have. Our store is also in a horrible location off the beaten path, so very difficult to find. We do not have the volume of sales compared to the other stores in our area. In June I received an excellent review buy only granted a .35 cent an hour raise...still below the average worker in our store...actually, I am the lowest paid associate in the district. I am a full-time college student studying sports medicine with a car payment to take care of. I live with my parents to offset the cost of living expenses while in college. They are helping all they can, but I need the job to pay the car payment. Jobs are hard to find right now but I am trying. Our managers shouldn't be managing anything. In my opinion, they are unethical and insensitive to their employees rights. No, I did not get their promises in writing, but I have learned a valuable lesson...never trust anyone that is directly benefiting from your hard work because they will take advantage of you.

1. Ditch the car payment- a college student shouldn't have a car that requires a car payment.
2. Search for a different job if they are hiring new people in at higher rates. They will keep you at the pay rate they think you will keep accepting no matter what promotion b.s. they tell you.

somehow you gave the impression of total dependency. maybe you mentioned the car payments or other needs. now they think they can promise you anything and not deliver. once you have found a different job and they make another promise ask for it in writing and see what happens. act more self confident and independent in your next job.

and about the car; live in a town where the local transit system is a never ending nightmare. the greedy shortsighted and now bankrupt car dealers objected to every route extension.

It's irrelevent that you have a car or what your expenses are. That's you're perrogative and you're entitlement. The root issue here, is that you feel you are underpaid and are being given the runaround. You have two choices when you work at these types of McJobs. HR is not going to help you, so documenting your issues and trying to be diplomatic is a waste of becuase it's doubtful that your McBosses have the social and business savy make wise HR decisions. Your choices therefore are, quit and go elsewhere for more money, or if you don't have that luxury, suck it up. Facts O' Life. These inequities are what prompt people to get educated and advance themselves, otherwise you're in for a lifetime of this nonsense. I'd recommend personally that you stay where you are andt look for another job, then quit. Don't try to change the system because you'll just be pissing against the wind. It's been this way since Adam and Eve were fist hired as Eden's gardners. They didn't even get severance when they were fired. :)
