I was hired at the Sports Authority in Plano, TX as a seasonal employee in November 2008. This being my first job, I thought the $7.51 hourly wage was okay...with the understanding that if they decided to keep me on after the holidays, I would be eligible for a raise. They kept me on but told me that due the economy the company had frozen all raises until further notice. All the while, they continue to hire new people at higher rates than I was being paid. When I voiced my opinion on their practices, they told me that I would be up for a promotion and a good raise if I would move to the footwear department. I trusted them and so moved to that department in 2009. Now, they tell me that the new DM will not approve my promotion until he sees my sales numbers come up. All the while, they put pressure on us to sell ECP's (extended warranties) that no one wants or cares to have. Our store is also in a horrible location off the beaten path, so very difficult to find. We do not have the volume of sales compared to the other stores in our area. In June I received an excellent review buy only granted a .35 cent an hour raise...still below the average worker in our store...actually, I am the lowest paid associate in the district. I am a full-time college student studying sports medicine with a car payment to take care of. I live with my parents to offset the cost of living expenses while in college. They are helping all they can, but I need the job to pay the car payment. Jobs are hard to find right now but I am trying. Our managers shouldn't be managing anything. In my opinion, they are unethical and insensitive to their employees rights. No, I did not get their promises in writing, but I have learned a valuable lesson...never trust anyone that is directly benefiting from your hard work because they will take advantage of you.
