I've got a moron for a boss

I work at a government research institute as a graduate student. On average I spend 60+ hours at work plus weekends. My boss/mentor relies heavily on me for "therapy" sessions when he has to vent, for computer support, for science advice, etc. Also, I have to help run and maintain his laboratory because his one and only technician is extremely piss at him. Why is she pissed at him? I will tell you why.

The technician does all the testings, provides results, but my boss credits his lazy post-doc who comes in at 9:30 and leaves work at 3 everyday to sing at the church, spend 1 hour coffee break gossiping about other people, talks about her pathetic sex life until lunch, goes for 1 hour lunches, gossips more and IMs online until it is time for church. He and she have actually violated ethical regulations at our institute based on the written guideline. I mean, for starters, you have to at work to get credit.

This is not an isolated incident. My boss/mentor actually took my hard earned data and credits two students of mine and allowed them to go to present my data at an international conference. Another red light...blarring ethical violation.

What have I done about it?

I've talked to him personally and he says he is hurt that I don't think he has my best interest at heart. I've gone to his boss and his boss talked to him. He came back and started harrassing me saying things like... "I don't know what you are trying to do to me...if I go down...you go down too!"

Has anything changed? Nada.

I can go on and on about these stories. But I am still at work and it is 4 in the morning...

cnubelevit (02/10/2006) I wonder how many researchers and and scientists' are working at fast food joints because somebody reported their ethics violations to the government? You know...falsified data, plagiarizim of research data is grounds for dismissal. Maybe it's time to go a little higher than your company or school? Lemongrass (02/10/2006) I think the best way to resolve any conflict is through talking. Why don't you grab some tea, and sit and chat for a while. You never know what might be driving this whole thing...tell him how it makes you feel! Walk the Planks (02/12/2006) The BBB is always there to report the company to. Also, if you have another job lined up or are ready to leave this one and don't care about any possible negative backlash from this boss, you can always create media and public interest -- letters or Emails to newspapers about the ethics violations of this boss, calls to news stations on his ethics, unfair working conditions, etc. I'm sure you can put the fire under the bossman to change his ways, and he'll be seeing things your way in the end, especially, if and when the time comes he has reporters standing around him with microphones in his face having to explain himself.
