40 Years - For What?

My husband just had his 40th anniversary with a "family owned" company. He got NOTHING, infact one of the bosses asked him how long he'd been with the company. He knew. My husband saw the boss's kids grow up. I was so embarassed for him, I know it hurt his feelings, but men don't show it like women do. I can't name any company or names, cause he wants to retire in a few years. I've tried to get him to quit, it's not worth the hassle, but he doesn't want to start a new job making less than he is, and that's what would happen . He just wants to retire, and enjoy life doing his hobbies. This company really stinks, used to be a good place, but not anymore. Glad to get that off my chest. We will move on and they better never call him for advice, after the way he was treated.

sheila (03/28/2006) Wow. 40 years at a company and they treat him like that. Sad. It seems to me that these days companies treat you like dirt whether you have been there 1 year or 40 years. You are only a number to them. It sounds like your husband's company was small though and that's even sadder that they would take that attitude. I am sorry to hear this. Your husband must be hurt, but his worth is NOT defined by these people, it is defined by people like you, who love him and know how much he means to you. This reminds me of a gentleman I worked with once. He had actually INVENTED the machine that the company that he worked for made a fortune with. THEY took out the patent, and HE got to keep working for them for 50 years. Oh yeah-he got a gold watch... SouthernProgrammer (03/29/2006) I had a friend who retired from my current employer after 36 years. They gave him a wooden plaque and a chip and soda "reception". Meanwhile, an HR manager left AFTER TWO YEARS and they gave him a reception at a steak house and an expensive gift. disillusioned (03/29/2006) I feel for you.....I recieved my 2 week layoff notice and my 30 year service award in the same week.My Supervisor Said"I didn't know you had been her that long."
